This term often used in the cocktail universe also represents an important concept in cosmetics.
First, where does this term come from?
It is the contraction of the English word mix- (to mix) and -logy (science, expertise), which represents the technique of mixing.
What is mixology?
It is the mixing of different ingredients to create a fresh mixture or an active ingredient with a formula to obtain an optimal result with more powerful ingredients, more efficient, and to be used shortly.
Two phases that, once mixed, would see their efficacy reduced after a few days. The principle of mixology therefore allows to mix them before use so that each component keeps its properties in an optimal way. We also speak of extemporaneous blending.
Then, which ingredients are concerned?
These are the active ingredients in cosmetics or APIs (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients) whose definitions are below:
API: biologically active component of a pharmaceutical product. Pharmaceutical products are composed of several components, the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) is the main ingredient. The other ingredients are called “excipients”.
Active ingredient (cosmetic): it is an ingredient that is used in a cosmetic product to give it benefits. It is an essential element of the product since it is the one that will give it its efficacy. Most of the time, they represent a small part of the formula, and they are therefore diluted with solvents or other ingredients that allow to create the texture of the product.
Some active ingredients must be mixed with the solvent just before use by the consumer to keep all their properties.
Finally, what package should be used for mixing formulas?
It is necessary to use a double compartment package, designed for extemporaneous mixes, which allows an optimal preservation of the ingredients and a mixing just before use, made by the consumer. This gesture should be ideally simple and fast.
